23. October 2025 | Lunch@Metagon Digital Sovereignty – Identifying, Understanding, and Managing Dependencies

Digital sovereignty is not a new topic, but in light of current geopolitical tensions, it is gaining increased attention. Many organizations have, often unknowingly, become dependent on standard software, hyperscalers, or global IT infrastructures. This makes it all the more important to identify these dependencies and actively manage them.

Recap of the 14th Lunch@Metagon

At the 14th Lunch@Metagon, the central question was how organisations can strengthen their digital sovereignty and thereby ensure their long-term ability to act.

Donat Grimm, Partner at Metagon, opened the event with an overview of the foundations of digital sovereignty. He emphasised that the goal is not autarky, but rather understanding the risks associated with dependencies and taking appropriate measures. Digital sovereignty means consciously shaping and managing systems, data, and competencies to remain independently capable of action in critical areas.

Dr. Lars Sommerhäuser from Empa presented the Chip FabLab project, a national initiative for chip production and research in Switzerland. The project aims to build local expertise in semiconductor technology in order to secure innovation, know-how, and value creation in Switzerland and strengthen the country’s technological sovereignty.

Raphael Widmer, Senior Consultant at Metagon, explored in his talk “Digital Sovereignty – Beyond Buzzwords” the opportunities and risks of global IT ecosystems. He demonstrated how dependent organisations have become on software and infrastructure providers and outlined measures to identify, assess, and actively manage these dependencies.

Metagon sincerely thanks all participants and speakers for their valuable insights and inspiring discussions.
